Michael Prokopchak, ASLA
A well-designed landscape is not decorative, it’s experiential,” avers Michael Prokopchak. “It influences movement, gathering, privacy and connection to place.” Prokopchak gained his understanding of plant material, construction and the rhythms of the land as a teenager working at a nursery. “What stayed with me was the realization that outdoor spaces shape how people live just as much as architecture,” he recounts.
The landscape architect founded Walnut Hill in 2006; today, the firm specializes in distinctive residential properties on the Chesapeake Bay and throughout the Mid-Atlantic, from historic restorations and classic gardens to modern outdoor-living environments and expansive estates. A staff of landscape architects, designers, project managers and craftspeople focuses on delivering exceptional quality, attention to detail and performance.
Prokopchak and his team closely collaborate with the client and other architects and specialists. “Clients value the clarity of our process, from initial vision and planning through design, construction and long-term care,” notes Prokopchak, who is closely involved in every project.
A holistic design approach considers proportion, circulation and spatial sequencing. “We are highly considerate of waterfront conditions and work with topography, managing drainage responsively and respecting the ecological sensitivity of each site,” Prokopchak says. “The result is work that feels intentional, balanced and enduring.”
