Katherine Ballou, Allied ASID

I can’t remember a time when art and design were not central to my life,” reflects Kate Ballou. “From an early age, I was drawn to art—it was where I felt most at ease. Over time, that interest expanded to environments as well as objects, and the way light, proportion, texture and scale shape how we live.”

For Ballou, interior design was a natural convergence: creative expression grounded in function. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design before earning a BFA from Parsons School of Design. She subsequently worked alongside leading designers and architects including Jacobsen Architecture before founding her boutique firm, formerly Hendrick Interiors, in 2013. Today, Studio Ballou has expanded in perspective and scope, designing residences throughout the DMV with an emphasis on architectural dialog along with aesthetic refinement.

“My approach is both intuitive and disciplined,” Ballou observes. “I consider the history of the home, its setting and underlying language. From there, I layer in material, color and form in a way that feels cohesive and intentional.” Ballou and her team work closely with clients, guiding them from initial concept through installation so the process feels structured, transparent and well-managed. Says Ballou, “When clients feel supported, they can enjoy the transformation as it unfolds.”
