Thomas Manion, AIA

Maryam Vesal

Thomas Manion was inspired—and educated—by time spent working for his contractor father while growing up. “I was fascinated by how design concepts come to life, and I learned how building structure defines outcome,” Manion says. He later studied architecture at Syracuse University, then gained experience with other DC-based architectural firms before founding Manion & Associates Architects in 1979.

Today, he and a staff of six work in a range of styles, from historic to boldly modern, tackling renovations, additions, new homes and light commercial projects in DC, Maryland and Virginia. “My goal is to make houses that are unique yet still fit into their neighborhoods,” Manion says. “I train my employees in good design while providing an environment where they can learn creativity.”

A client-centered philosophy grounds Manion & Associates’ process. “From first interview through final construction, our firm emphasizes an open, collaborative approach among architects, clients, builders and artists,” Manion explains. “We listen to our clients’ ideas, preferences and goals while ensuring easy communication where decisions are made and agreed upon by clients and architects together.”

Thomas Manion has written and lectured on passive-solar, earth-sheltered and other energy-saving approaches. The firm has received numerous AIA awards over the years.
