Public parks and civic landscapes by Frederick Law Olmsted—who masterminded New York’s Central Park—first caught the attention of Oomer Syed. “The intentionality of these spaces left a lasting impression of how thoughtfully designed environments can influence daily life,” Syed recounts. He studied landscape architecture at the University of Connecticut and joined Fine Landscapes in 2014.
Company founder Charles Owen has since retired; today, Syed works with landscape designer Charles McCall leading a staff of landscape architects, designers, horticulture specialists, project managers and skilled tradespeople. From its inception in 1978, “Fine Landscapes has been grounded in classical composition, horticultural depth and enduring craftsmanship,” says Syed. Its extensive design-build portfolio includes comprehensive residential environments located in the Mid-Atlantic and internationally. Landscape maintenance is also offered.
Syed and his team invite input from clients early in the process. “That collaboration impacts our site-planning decisions,” Syed explains. “From conceptual sketches through installation, we maintain clear communication and coordinated oversight.” A continuous study of plant materials and evolving landscape practices informs each project, enabling thoughtful diversity, sustainability and long-term resilience.
Most recently, Fine Landscapes received the 2025 Home of the Year award from Modern Luxury and six 2025 Excellence in Landscape awards from the Landscape Contractors Association.
