Early on, Jim Burton had an artistic bent. He painted murals, drew cartoons and took architecture classes in high school, where his work was judged by visiting critics from Carnegie Mellon and University of Virginia. “The idea of creating designs with a certain permanence attracted me to study architecture,” he says. “A minor in art allowed me to maintain a balanced approach to design.”

As a young architect, Burton experimented by designing two homes for his own use that tested mountain and valley site conditions—and subsequently supported lectures, books, exhibits and future projects. With Page Carter, they formed Carter + Burton in 1999. From the start, the partners embraced sustainability, and their firm has been recognized over the years as a leader in innovations and trends.

Today, Carter + Burton does new construction, renovations and historic preservation in urban, rural and suburban areas. Interior design services are offered, and the architects frequently team up with landscape architects “to add layers of service that help elevate all aspects of a project,” Burton explains. An inclusive, service-based approach to clients promotes trust in decision-making as well as customization and creativity.

Carter + Burton has received numerous design awards and was feaured in the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2023 and 2025.
