Balodemas Architects is a six-person design firm founded in 1988 by principal Lou Balodemas.
As a DC-native, Balodemas gained a lasting appreciation of the formality, monumentality and broad stylistic possibilities found in the city as it was transforming. Prominent projects like I.M. Pei’s East Wing of the National Gallery and the political, creative and technical processes behind them led to a deeper interest in architecture.
The firm specializes in transformational residential work, approaching each project as an opportunity to meet clients’ needs in fresh and modern ways.
“Our success depends on the team being approachable, collaborative and flexible,” Balodemas notes. Transparency and candor are central to their design process. “We guide our clients through the realities of feasibility, scope, cost and schedule from the outset,” he explains. “To keep their journey manageable, we spread decision-making across design and construction, striving to communicate clearly and directly at every stage”.
At its core, the firm’s philosophy is one of genuine partnership. “We achieve our best results when we listen,” Balodemas says, “helping clients make a project their own.”
